Ticking a task today doesn't add it to today's done list

If I go to a custom list and check a box, I did the task today. For me to associate the task with today I first need to migrate it and then check it. This is annoying.

I get that, I agree.
I'm thinking a feature where when you check off a task on a day other than 'today', it will popup with something saying along the lines of 'do you want this task to be complete today or the scheduled date'
With a preference for default behavior 'always ask', 'always today', 'always scheduled date'
